Apartheid's Bitter Roots: Notes of an Eighth-Generation Afrikaner

First published 1987 by Macmillan of Canada

A history of the Afrikaner people told through Marq’s own family, who arrived at the Cape in the seventeenth century and, as he puts it, “was there at the beginning”. The book follows eight generations of de Villiers to explain the roots of apartheid.

It won the first Alan Paton Award for non-fiction writing about South Africa.
