Timbuktu

The Sahara's Fabled City of Gold

First published 2007 by Walker & Company

The history of Timbuktu, the city on the southern edge of the Sahara that was for centuries a centre of trade, gold and Islamic learning, and that became a byword in Europe for the remote and unreachable.

Marq and Sheila had used Timbuktu as a base while researching Sahara, and came away convinced the city deserved a book of its own. They paid particular attention to its long tradition of a tolerant, open Islam.

Marq’s own website called the book Timbuktu: Africa’s Fabled City of Gold, but the book itself, like the library records, has The Sahara’s Fabled City of Gold.
